ARES Commander Function Keys
Today we’re going to talk about a feature that has been within ARES Commander from the beginning.
You probably know about Function keys and you might be using some of them. But we’re going to take expedition to all these keys. And I’m going to convince you that using them is going to make your work much faster. We all want to go faster when creating CAD drawing and we better.
F1 – Displays Help – Use F1 to go into Help. If you happen to be in a command and you press F1, it will display Help function of that respective command that you are using.
F2 onwards all keys are toggle keys.
F2 – Toggles Command Window – This key shows you the command window, so you can see what you’ve been doing, what entries you have made. You can just press the toggle on that to go back and forth.
F3 – Toggles ESnap Mode – By pressing this key, you’ll see that it turns ESNAP “ON” or off — your Entity Snap. Now it happens to have your ESNAP “ON”, you can see them showing up on the screen. Now I will say I think pressing F3 is faster than trying to do a right-click or trying to find it on the status bar.
F5 – Toggles Isoplane Mode – By pressing this key, you’ll actually see that it doesn’t do much right now. It changed my isometric plane. But I am not in Isometric Drawing mode. First you should get into Isometric Drawing mode. To do isometrics, you have to work in 3D, you go into Grid Settings and you set the orientation to Isometric.
So now you will actually see if you press F5, it will switch you around from one isometric plane to the other.
In ARES Commander, we have ISOMETRICGRID command. This command automatically sets your snap style to isometric and it puts you into the “isoplane”.
F7 – Toggles Display Grid Mode – After pressing this key, you will see that it turns the grid “ON” or “OFF”.
F8 – Toggles Ortho Mode – This key turns the ever-popular Ortho “ON” and I am sure that you are using that. It allows you to force ARES Commander to draw orthogonally or to move things orthogonally. Of all the function keys F8 is most frequently used.
F9 – Toggles Snap Mode – This key will turn the Snap “ON” and now when your are drawing the line, you’ll see that you are getting snapping to specific points along the way. So that just depends whatever you have your Snap setting to, but if you want to make sure that you don’t draw below a certain increment, you can set you Snap to help you out.
F10 – Toggles Polar Guide Mode – This key turns Polar “ON”. Now if you go down there to the status bar and click on the Polar button, If you have your Polar Tracking set to 45. That just means that ARES Commander is going to make it to 45 degrees. You can set it to any values that you want. You can set it to multiple values if you want to. It’s just to help you draw entity or move entity at a specific angle. It’s pretty powerful feature. If you go into the Line command now, you will actually see it’s just a little bit easier for you to do anything that has to do with a 45-degree angle. It will let you do other angles as well, but it certainly makes it very easy for you to anything at a 45-degree angle increment.
F11 – Toggles ETrack Mode – This key turns Entity Tracking “ON”. If you just do something like go to the Line command, and you want to start the Line command using the same — in this case, it would be the x coordinate of the entity up there, and you have Entity Snap Tracking “ON”, You can just hover over that and you’ll see that your line will start relatively to that x coordinate. Maybe you want to move this line and grab it relative to another coordinate like this one right up here, you’ll see it’s very easy to use Entity Snap Tracking to grab the x or the y coordinate of existing entities on the screen.
These all keys will increase your working speed; it’s up to you to use these keys.
F12 – I will explain about this in future.
But that was a quick tour of the Function keys. If you are not using them, and there’s a function that you use frequently, that’s assigned to one of those Function keys, you should definitely use them. They are fast and speedy. This will give you an opportunity to really go fast inside of ARES Commander.
