ArcelorMittal Investes in EDEM Software
Edinburgh, Scotland – 11 January 2017. EDEM, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) specialist and market leader, is pleased to announce that ArcelorMittal, the largest steel producing company in the world, has invested in EDEM software.
EDEM is the market leading software for bulk material simulation and is used to optimize the design and performance of bulk material handling equipment in the mining, metals, heavy equipment manufacturing and process industries. The iron and steel making industry faces many challenges in optimizing bulk materials handling processes, in order to maintain product quality.
ArcelorMittal will be using EDEM to increase their knowledge of the iron and steel making process. EDEM simulation and analysis will enable the R&D Process Engineering Team to model blast furnace activity and to perform more realistic parameter studies.
Dr. Edouard Izard, Research Engineer at Process Engineering, of ArcelorMittal commented:
“We were looking for a tool to help us understand material behavior and optimize complex blast furnace processes such as loading and unloading as well as wear. One of the key reasons that made us choose EDEM over other DEM software was the high level of expertise and support provided by the EDEM technical team.”
Richard LaRoche, CEO of EDEM added:
“We are pleased to welcome ArcelorMittal as one of our customers. EDEM is already being used by 8 of the top iron and steel making companies in the world. We look forward to a long-term partnership with ArcelorMittal and to assisting them in deploying advanced EDEM simulation technology to meet their specific R&D needs.”

EDEM is the market-leading Discrete Element Method (DEM) software for bulk material simulation. EDEM simulation technology is used for ‘virtual testing’ of equipment that handles or processes bulk materials in the mining, equipment manufacturing and process industries. Companies worldwide use EDEM to optimize equipment design, increase productivity, reduce costs of operations, shorten product development cycles and drive product innovation.
Founded in 2003, EDEM is a global company headquartered in Edinburgh, UK with offices in USA and Japan and supported by a network of channel partners in Asia-Pacific, South America and South Africa. The executive team is Richard LaRoche – Chief Executive, Ian Williamson – Chief Revenue Officer and Gordon Grant – Chief Financial Officer.
